The Statehouse Scam Punishing Working Families

Listen up. They’re rolling out new rules across the country, a bureaucratic nightmare designed to trip you up and strip your family of its health coverage. They call it a “work requirement.” They demand you prove you work, volunteer, or go to school for 80 hours every single month. Miss that target, and a computer automatically cuts off your Medicaid. No warning, no compassion. Just gone.

Here’s the gut punch. The very same lawmakers passing these laws often work fewer than 55 hours a month in their official legislative sessions. Let that sink in. They show up part-time to create full-time misery for you. For their part-time service, they get a full-time salary, top-tier health insurance for their own families, and taxpayer-funded expense accounts. Do they have to submit a timesheet? Do they have to upload proof of their hours to a glitchy state website? No. They operate on the honor system.

But you? The single mom working two jobs, the son caring for his elderly father, the student trying to build a better life? You are treated like a suspect. One missing paystub, one reporting error, and the system is designed to terminate you. They are spending millions of your tax dollars not on healthcare, but on a massive policing operation to track your every move, while they face zero accountability for their own time on the public dime. It’s the ultimate hypocrisy.

DON'T BE A VICTIM. FIGHT BACK.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING: Keep every paystub, timesheet, and volunteer confirmation letter. Take pictures with your phone. Email them to yourself. Create a paper trail so thick they can't ignore it. If you’re a caregiver, get a letter from the doctor. Proof is your power.
DEMAND A FAIR HEARING: If you get a termination notice, you have the right to appeal. The notice must tell you how. Request a Fair Hearing IMMEDIATELY. This often forces them to keep your coverage active while your case is reviewed. Do not wait.
REQUEST AN ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW: Before the hearing, call the state Medicaid agency and demand to speak to a supervisor. Clearly state that you have met the requirements and have the proof. Make them review their decision. Record the name of every person you speak to.
HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE: Let the state agency know that this bureaucratic nightmare is unacceptable. Tell them you know that the lawmakers forcing this on you don't have to prove a single hour of their own work.

This isn't about encouraging work. This is about creating a system so difficult, so punishing, that families give up in frustration. They are counting on you to get lost in the paperwork. Don't let them win.
